Organizers
of the Bugisu Regional Secondary School football competition have intensified
the fight against mercenaries.
With 24 schools taking part in boy’s football and
28 schools registered for girl’s football, the organizers have put in place
stringent measures to stop players not eligible for the competition.
Isaiah Sasaga the Chairperson of Bugisu Secondary School Sports Association says that a screening exercise to weed out mercenaries is ongoing. Sasaga says that mercenaries deprive genuine students from participating in the games and therefore affect talent identification plans.
Ivan Mauso the General Secretary Bugisu Secondary
School Sports Association says that they are using the Education Management
Information System(EMIS) and photo albums generated from the Uganda Secondary
School Sports Association system to screen players.
Mauso also says that in a bid to control the players, this year’s competition is residential with the boys staying at Mbale Secondary School while the girls are at Nkoma Secondary School.
