Residents of Bukhadala, Butiru and Butiru town council in Manafwa District today held a peaceful demonstration over the poor state of Butiru-Bukhadala-Kwapa road.

The residents blocked the 18 kilometre road which leads to neighbouring Tororo District with logs and planted banana suckers and this paralysed movement. Vicente Musungu, a business man in Butiru town council claims the road has gone three years without rehabilitation. According to Musungu, most of their merchandise is gotten from Tororo and having a poor road network affects them.

Francis Kitoyi says another residents claims that an expectant mother heading to hospital last week lost her life in a motorcycle accident as a result of the poor road. Kitoyi says despite several pleas to the Manafwa District leaders and area members of parliament to lobby for the improvement of the road, no action has been taken.

Rashid Wanzala a commercial motorcycle rider in Bukhadala Sub County says they have so far lost three riders on the Butiru-Bukhadala-Kwapa road. Wanzala says they opted to demonstrate peacefully to send a message to the leaders who appear not concerned.

Kefa Mafumo an aspirant for the Butiru County Member of Parliament also working with the President’s Office claims they raised 5,000 litres of fuel for the District road equipment to work on the road but were frustrated by the District leadership.

Kosea Kigayi Kimono the LCV chairperson of Manafwa district when contacted on phone declined to comment on the matter.
