Lira District authorities have attributed the poor performance and high rate of absenteeism in primary schools to the absence of lunch.

Jane Frances Ofungi, the Lira District Education Officer says that learners usually lose concentration during the afternoon lessons because of hunger and escape from classes, which has an impact on their academic performance. Ofungi says that parents should support their children with food and scholastic materials because the government cannot do everything.

Agnes Akello, the head teacher of Abolet Primary School says that some learners are dodging the afternoon classes in search of food.

Salume Aceng and Leah Akello, Primary five pupils at Abolet Primary School say that they can’t concentrate in class on empty stomachs. They add that their parents are poor and can’t afford to pack food for their children.

Jonathan Odur the Erute South Constituency MP tasked parents to contribute money to enable schools to prepare meals for the children.
