Authorities at Mbale City Council are encouraging urban dwellers to engage in urban farming as one of the ways of promoting the consumption of safe food.
This was revealed at a Food Parliament organized by Food Rights Alliance (FRA), Rikolto in East Africa and Global Consumer Centre (Consent). The Food Parliament was held at Mbale Courts View Hotel.
Catherine Nabulwala a senior assistant town clerk who represented the City town clerk Ambrose Ochen, said that City dwellers need to start growing their own food in their backyard gardens. Nabulwala says that this will ensure that they consume safe food and follow proper food handling processes.
Nabulwala says that the promotion of urban farming is in line with sustainable development goal number one which aims at ending poverty in all its manifestations by 2030. She says the plan also aims at meeting sustainable development goal number two of ending hunger and achieving food security and improved nutrition. She says the plan will also ensure that sustainable development goal number eleven of making cities and human settlement inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable is met.
Peter Businda an agribusiness advisor with Rikolto explains that numerous people are moving to cities in search of opportunities and need to consume safe food. Businda says that they are empowering various stakeholders like market vendors, consumers, farmers, media, political and technical people with knowledge on safe food handling.
Yusuf Nsubuga the general secretary, Mbale Central Market has warned farmers that they risk having their food rejected by vendors if they do not follow proper food handling procedures. Nsubuga says that the capacity building sessions by Rikolto have made vendors deal in food that meets the standards.
