Nathan Nandala
Mafabi the Bugisu Cooperative Union (BCU) Board Chairperson has announced new
coffee prices.
Appearing on Elgon FM on Saturday, Nandala reveladed that the
price of parchment coffee will now be set at 9,000 Ugandan Shillings per
kilogram. In a bid to support local farmers, Nandala emphasized the importance
of maintaining quality throughout the coffee handling process. He said this
would ensure that farmers receive better prices for the crop on the global
market.
Nandala also assured farmers that the coffee supplied last
season is still intact and he is actively seeking funds to settle outstanding
balances owed to selected farmers.
Multinational companies are currently purchasing coffee at
prices ranging between 6,000 to 7,000 shillings per kilogram. Nandala says BCU
sets the price in order to protect farmers from exploitation by other coffee
buyers.
