Anti-retroviral drugs in Mbale District are being sold to livestock farmers illegally with intentions of fattening their animals.
Robert Wandwasi the Mbale District HIV/AIDS Focal Person says they have realized that mobile key population clients like the commercial sex workers are selling anti-retroviral drugs to livestock farmers. As a result, Wandwasi says some farmers are giving the life prolonging drugs to their cows, goats, pigs and chicken.
Wandwasi says that key population clients keep moving to different areas and therefore get drug refills everywhere they go. He says that they then engage livestock farmers who buy the anti-retroviral drugs for their animals and birds to fatten. He says that all stakeholders need to taka lead role to discourage the farmers from giving ARVs to livestock.
Richard Okotel the executive director Spotlight On Africa, Uganda Foundation dealing with HIV/AIDS matters says it is unfortunate to see farmers buying ARVs for their animals. Okotel says they continue to sensitize their clients against selling ARVs to farmers.
