Commercial motorcycle riders (Boda Boda) in Mbale City have accused police of extortion.
The riders also accuse police of using excessive force during operations. Police last month launched an operation against riders with no permits and helmets.
Juma Masera the publicity secretary for Mbale Motorcycle Riders and Operators Association accuses the police of acting in unprofessional manner. Masera says despite the operations against non-compliant riders being good, there should be no acts of extortion and use of excessive force.
But Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson has asked boda boda riders to embrace the operation instead of putting the blame on police. Taitika says that acts of extortion should not happen since riders found culpable are issued with receipts and expected to pay the money in the bank.
