Authorities at
Mbale City Abattoir have asked the leadership at Mbale City Council to take
action against illegal meat dealers.
Mbale City Abattoir Manager Hajji Abdu
Boyi says that there is a lot of illegal meat that gets to the City without being
inspected and approved by the veterinary doctors putting the lives of consumers
at risk.
Speaking at the handover of a newly
constructed wall fence and repaired slaughter hall for the City Abattoir with
funding worth more than 100 million shillings from Rikolto, an international
NGO, Boyi asked authorities at Mbale City Council to intensify operations
against illegal meat.
Dr. Simon Massa a veterinary doctor at
Mbale City Council said that an inspection carried out revealed that only 30%
of the butcheries in Mbale City get meat from the City abattoir. Massa says
most butcheries ferry meat from Districts like Bududa and Sironko. He says
there is need for close collaboration with all stakeholders to end the trade in
illegal meat.
Industrial City Division Mayor Muhamood
Masaba accused law enforcement officers in Mbale City for being behind the rise
in illegal meat practices saying that many of them connive with illegal meat
dealers a reason many butcheries are filled with uninspected meat.
Peter Businda, a coordinator with
Rikolto, said the refurbishment of the Mbale City abattoir aims at improving
the conditions under which animals are slaughtered so as to ensure that quality
meat is consumed.
