Tom Gashali the head teacher Divine College, Buyaga
in Bulambuli District has decried the high cost of food as the second term
opens.
Schools officially opened today for second
term studies and Gashali says parents must cope with the hard economic times.
According to Gashali, as parents send back their children to school, they need
to make some early fees payments to enable schools stay afloat.
According to Gashali, a bag of beans currently
goes for five hundred thousand shillings and if parents don’t cooperate,
schools will struggle to survive. He however explains that early reporting of
students helps in their pursuit of academic excellence.
Commenting on the term opening, Mafabi Asha
Nabulo a former candidate for the Sironko District Woman Parliamentary position
says that the covid-19 times attested to the fact that teachers play an
important role in shaping children. Nabulo says that several children engaged in
drug abuse and cases of teenage pregnancies went up during covid since children
were at home.
