The sub counties of
Bumbo, Bukokho, Buwabwala, Tsekululu and Mukoto in Namisindwa District are
known for onion growing.
John Mumali an onion
farmer in Namwela village Kabole parish, Bukokho sub-county says a kilogram of
onions has dropped from 3,000 shillings per kilogram to 300 shillings only.
Mumali attributed the
drop in prices to a bumper harvest as a result of the moderate rains they got.
He says many farmers went into onion growing after realizing it was profitable.
Nicolas Soita an agro
dealer in Bumbo town council says most farmers acquired loans to venture into
onion growing and have now failed to clear them.
But David Mityelo the Namisindwa
District Production Officer has asked farmers to always diversify and desist
from growing only one type of crop.
