At least 14 people have died due to flooding triggered by heavy rains in Somalia and thousands remain trapped.

The flooding began last month due to the rising water levels in the Juba and Shabelle rivers which caused them to overflow.

Over 47,000 people have fled their homes, the United Nations humanitarian affairs agency (Ocha) says. In Luuq district, 2,400 people are stuck in their own homes surrounded by water.

Bridges and roads have been destroyed by the downpours, making it difficult to reach affected households. A number of toilets are overflowing into residential areas, raising the risks of water-borne diseases.
