Political Scientist Abbas Wetaaka has described the Presidency of Donald Trump as a global crisis.

Millions of voters across the US chose to return Donald Trump to the presidency on Tuesday. He will be sworn in to office at an inauguration ceremony on Monday 20 January 2025.

Latest projections put Trump at 279 electoral college votes and Harris at 223 electoral college votes. Across 50 states, plus Washington DC, there are 538 votes up for grabs and the winner is the candidate that gets 270 or more.

For Uganda and other African countries, Wetaaka says there is need to brace themselves for funding cuts in several sectors. Wetaaka says that the Trump presidency aims at reducing money spent in grants to developing countries.

On immigration, Trump promised to enact the biggest mass deportation of undocumented migrants in US history. According to Wetaaka, the USA is traditionally made up of immigrants and Trump’s plan of mass deportation is not practical.

On the democratic processes in Africa and other parts of the world, Abbas believes Trump’s Presidency will not do much in pushing for democracy across the globe. He says Trump is only bent on making money and prioritizing the interests of the wealthy.
