Mbale city has resettled over 1,000 street vendors at the Mbale central market as part of efforts to clear vendors from streets and ungazetted areas.
The vendors, who previously operated on the streets around the city, had their kiosks demolished.
Deputy Town Clerk Jolly Hasoho told Elgon FM that the city allocated unoccupied lockups and stalls at the central market to the vendors.
She notes that many street vendors have requested for stall allocations since the exercise began, and the city is working to accommodate them in gazetted areas.
Hasoho denies allegations of soliciting dues from vendors, inviting anyone with evidence to identify the staff involved.
Resettled vendors Hamuza Mudebo and Sarah Namataka welcome the move, citing harsh street conditions.
