Uganda Boxing Team- the bomber's Captain, Joshua
Tukamuhebwa secured the first victory at the ongoing Paris Olympic Games
qualifiers, in Busto Arsizio, Italy.
The referee intervened in round three, awarding
Tukamuhebwa the win against Guatemala's Garcia Edgar in the preliminary stage
of the men’s 63kgs category.
Tukamuhebwa’s triumph shines as a beacon of hope
for the embattled team that departed the country just last Friday, mere hours
before the games commenced. The three-man and one-woman squad has already two
of them knocked out, with the first one; Shafick Mawanda losing just by a
walkover Singapore’s Teo Wei Xuan in the men's 51kg category after the Ugandan
youngster failed to make it to the playing venue on time.
Later, Yusuf Nkobeza also took to the ring but
lost to Romania’s Andrei Aradoaie 5-0 in the men’s 80kg round of 64
preliminaries on Tuesday leaving the burden on Tukamuhebwa and female boxer Emily
Nakalema if Uganda is to get any Olympic slot through this window where at
least 49 spots that are up for grabs at the competition.
