Residents of Manyonyi lower village in Bungokho Sub County in Mbale District have engaged in de-silting of Nakairira stream to avert flooding.
Pithon Magomu the LCI Chairperson for Manyonyi lower village says that apart from de-silting the stream, they have also dug channels to ease the flow of water. Magomu says this will avert any possible flooding especially during the current rains that are pounding the area.
Regina Mabonga the Disaster Management Committee Chairperson for Mbale District says the decision to de-silt the stream follows last year’s rains which left Manyonyi lower village flooded, destroying property and crops.
Catherine Mugisha, a programme officer with Uganda Red Cross says that working hand in with partners like Caritas, Oxfam and the European Union in strengthening capacities of communities in Namisindwa, Mbale and Sironko on preparedness for disasters.
