Sarah Watenga an inspector of schools in Mbale District says that of the 69 government aided primary schools, 36 are headed by women while 33 are led by men.
According to Watenga, of the 15 government aided schools, 10 have female head teachers with only five having male head teachers. Watenga explains that in some cases, female head teachers are actually performing better than their male counterparts.
She says that they are still grappling with poor community attitude towards women in leadership but with continued sensitization, the trend will change.
